Love your blog! Been doing this for four months and I'm beginning to get the hang of it. One question...Why do we need fillers? I know what it is, but why do I sometimes read "I needed a filler."
Zulema-
Thanks for stopping by! Great question. You may need a "filler" for any number of reasons. The majority of time I use a filler item (pencil, gum, candy bar, clearance item, etc) to reduce my out of pocket cost.
CVS
At CVS I typically use a filler to reduce my out of pocket cost.
1) Say I have a $3/$15 CVS coupon to use and the total cost of my purchases is only $14.50. I have two options- 1) Not use the $3/$15 coupon or 2) add a filler item (like a $0.50 candy bar) to increase my total to $15 so I will be able to use the $3/$15 coupon.
2)Or say the total of my purchases equal $6.70 and I only have a $6.00 ECB & a $7.00 ECB. I could use the $6 ECB and pay $0.70 out of pocket.. OR I could use a filler item (let's say a candy bar again) for $0.50. The filler item would increase my total to $7.20. I would use the $7 ECB and only pay $0.20 out of pocket.
Walgreens
At Walgreens a filler item is typically used because the number of coupons you use can not exceed the number of purchases you make in a transaction. For example- Say I am buying 3 Sure Deodorants and I want to use 3- $1.00 off coupons AND I have a Register Reward I want to use. Because I want to use 4 coupons in this transaction, I have to purchase at least 4 items. In this case I look for the cheapest thing I can find (usually a $0.20 pencil).
Other
In some cases you may need a filler item to keep your transaction total from going negative after all coupons have been applied.
I hope that helped answer your question.
Sincerely,

Did I leave anything out???
