Homemade Freezer Smoothie Kits

During the last Kroger Mega Event I picked up a couple bags of those Yoplait Smoothie Kits. I had been dying to try them for awhile and at $0.99 it was the cheapest I’d seen them.

Delicious? Yes!  However, I was shocked by how little was actually in the in bag! A handful of fruit and what looked like frozen yogurt balls. Surely, I thought, I could put together my own homemade smoothie kits!

So I headed to the store for an ice cube tray, fat free vanilla yogurt, and frozen fruit.

The first thing to do was spoon the yogurt into the ice tray and stick them in the freezer for several hours.  After they were frozen they popped right out of the tray just like ice cubes.

I purchased my frozen fruit from Walmart, separated the mixed berries and sliced the strawberries in half.  This time of year you should be able to find fruit on sale that can be frozen to use in your smoothie kits throughout the year.

Homemade Very Berry Smoothie Kit – Serves Two
6-Frozen Yogurt Cubes, cut in half
1/2 cup strawberries, sliced in half
1/4 cup of raspberries or blackberries
1/4 cup of blueberries

Store in your favorite freezer bag.

With all the ingredients pictured above I was able to make 6 1/2 Very Berry Smoothie Kits (total of 13 servings).

When you’re ready for a smoothie, just toss the contents of your kit into a blender and add 1 cup of milk.  If you like your smoothies a little sweeter, just add a spoon full of sugar.

Blend on HIGH 1-1.5 minutes.  Feel free to add anything else to your smoothie that you like!

Enjoy this delicious homemade treat! Store leftovers in the freezer.

Putting together these kits was so much fun.  I’m looking forward to trying some different combinations and will be keeping an eye out for cheap fruit!

What’s your favorite smoothie flavor combination?

AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing the idea! My son is big on peanut butter & banana smoothies made with chocolate soy milk for breakfast. Of course, he loves other kinds, too. Pre-packaging smoothie mixes would make the morning go so much easier. Now, to figure out a way to freeze little balls of peanut butter…. :-)

Banana
6 oz yogurt
about 1 cup frozen fruits (whatever we feel like, but usually berries)
splash of juice or energy drink (like Gatorade) just to liquefy it.

Funny- I don't remember there being any yogurt in those mixes. I bought a bunch of them on sale and LOVE them, but I too was disappointed with how much was in the package. I was on a survey panel and let them know that it was easy enough for me to make my own at a fraction of the cost. When I make mine I just use 1 cup different frozen fruits and 1 1/2 cups milk.

I just came across this and I have a question (and I hope I remember to check back for a response – I am sometimes forgetful : ) ).
What amount of yogurt did you use to make the 13 servings?
Thanks for posting this recipe.

Hi! I used the container of yogurt (not sure what the oz. are- just your standard yogurt container) in the picture to get the 13 servings worth. I hope that helps answer your question.

Excellent idea for making your own kits!!!! I've also been getting bananas when on sale, peel them, break in half and set them on wax or parchment paper in the freezer, then into a ziploc bag once frozen. I love the taste that bananas add to smoothies :)

That sounds easy enough! I don't much care for bananas, but my husband might. :)

Shelly that's a great idea. I know i let way to many strawberries just spoil in fridge this summer!

I'm just making up a OAMC cooking plan for September and this is a PERFECT idea! Thanks for sharing.

We usually use frozen bananas, blueberries and heavy whipping cream. My daughter doesn't care for bananas so in hers I have to add a bit of honey to sweeten in.

Honey is a great idea to add a little sweetness, I'm going to have to try that. I'm like your daughter I don't care for bananas either! :)

Thanks for posting this! I want to start making smoothes each morning, but don't have the time. This will be so much easier to have pre-made kits! Thanks for the idea!!

I purchased some of the Yoplait Smoothie mixes during Kroger's mega event, but haven't tried them yet. I love your idea of making your own though!
